Software Development Progress and Volcano News

2–3 minutes

This week I have updates on outreach, software, and the volcanoes in the area.

Let’s start with outreach from two weeks ago. Donovan said, “Pretty slow today, but Shauna came by and visited for a while. Maybe 6-8 people total. I gave out some ice packs, and Joyce had snack stuff, and water, and a pretty good bin of clothing.” Joyce also added, “A guy named Steven said he had two tents stolen recently and now he has no where to go. I said we’d try and locate one for him. Don’t know if he’ll show up again.”

Outreach this past Saturday was typical. So far, we’ve been filling propane every week despite telling folks that we’re pausing until the fall. The folks who have brought their tank have brought it in desperation, so we fill some, but not all. This week we filled 5 tanks. One was for Jim, who has been transporting tanks for us for a few months now.

Next update is on the volcanoes. Mt. Rainier is still grumbling, but it’s slowed down quite a bit. However, Axial Sea Mount, which is off the coast of Oregon, started grumbling with very sizable quakes the other day, and it just may be getting ready to erupt as scientists predicted last year. If this is of interest to you, you can watch the livestream from the bottom of the ocean. It’s only live every 3 hours so you may have to keep checking to find the camera live.

Lastly is an update on the software I’ve been building. I’m currently working on the last piece to make it functional, which is the home page. Currently, the “Outreach Notebook” can take attendance, flag neighbors who haven’t been seen within a specified timeframe, and the outreach volunteers who’s taking attendance can put notes, which include the ability to tag a neighbor. The neighbor database also allows us to track clothing and shoe sizes. The home page has a semi-functioning calendar and scheduling system. I need to correct some of the functionality on this before I can say it’s functional. After that will be adding resource information. The last steps after that are to do some testing and then some security reviews. It’s getting much closer.

This week’s weather forecast is still warm, but there will be a few days reprieve before it warms back up next Monday.
